Engineers Without Borders is a development NGO that works in Canada to educate youth and lobby politicians on more effective aid policy as well as in 4 African countries: Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, and Burkina Faso.

In Africa we partner with local governments (student volunteers typically work in the district gov't which is comparable to a Municipality in Canada), NGOs &/or farmers/ farming groups.

In the placement you do not build anything structurally speaking- the purpose of the placement is to act as a consultant/ collaborator with the group you are working with. The goal is to help build that group's capacity to progress to more sustainable state of development.

Examples of this are: GARI (Governance and Rural Infrastructure) in Ghana works with district gov'ts on projects such as the implementation of data management systems to increase the efficiency of their planning process as a whole.

Also MOFA- Ministry of Food and Agriculture- a gov't division also in Ghana works with EWB volunteers and together they formed a program known as Agriculture as a Business to help farmers become more prosperous (as opposed to having their farm for mere survival) through market access strategies among many other steps. This program is now being utilized by approx 2000 farmers in Ghana.

These are just some of the numerous examples of what EWB does overseas- if you have any questions about the program feel free to post them on the discussion board!

It sounds interesting but at the same time seems like it would require a ton of work. Especially in the heat :O

previous volunteers have said it is a lot of work- but a great deal of it is done within an office setting with some field work/ village stay and in two of the countries: Zambia and Malawi are in South Africa it's "winter" season- obviously no snow but not as hot as you would expect
