Adult literacy is an important social and economic issue, with 48% of Canadian adults having literacy skills below the required level to work in the knowledge economy. Low literacy rates result in negative and costly health, employment and economic consequences for society and the individuals affected. At the same time, there are few available peer reviewed studies analysing mobile edtech tools for teaching adult literacy.
With this as motivation, we have developed iPad applications for teaching adult literacy skills. For this study, we require McMaster University students as participants. Participation requires signing up for a 1.5 hour time slot (see below) to take part in the study. During the study, you will be given literacy practice sheets to fill out before and after using an iPad application. You will also be given a questionnaire asking your opinions of the iPad application.
None of the feedback you provide or data gathered will be reported with your name attached. The data gathered and feedback provided will be written into a report and used to improve software for teaching adult literacy.
Study participants will receive a $10 Tim Hortons Gift Card as a thank you for participating in the study.
