Joel's Appeal Board Minutes Posted

For those interested in hearing the fines which resulted in Joel Leavitt's disqualification, and what was discussed during his appeal, the MSU has posted the minutes of that meeting online. They can be read here.

"On Friday, March 7 2008, the Electoral Appeal Board of the MSU held an open hearing at which Joel Leavitt appealed fines and disqualification from the presidential election. On review of the evidence, a number of fines were rescinded and the disqualification overturned".

A quick recap can be read below:

Items That Were Reversed:
  1. Fine of $100 for Facebook Event Pre-Campaigning
    • A Facebook event created prior to campaigning
  2. Fine of $15 for Use of Prohibited Internet Campaign Technology
    • Basically for the same thing as above
  3. Fine of $15 for Campaign Team Member Wearing Advertising in Poll
    • A girl wearing a yellow ribbon near polling station
  4. Fine of $15 for use of Ipod During Speeches to Classes
    • Use of an iPod to play background music during his classroom speeches, which was dropped because the iPod itself wasn't deemed speakers, microphones, or amplifying materials
  5. Fine of $15 for Misrepresentation regarding Young Liberals Elections Event
    • Young Liberals Club event which was originally set to have only Joel Leavitt speaking, was later changed to a political awareness event, and in the end was cancelled. "Concerns were with regards to Mr. Senisterra misrepresenting himself at the All Candidates meeting because it was not clear if he was there as a member of Mr. Leavitt’s campaign team or as a member of the Young Liberals"
  6. Disqualification
    • Discussion over severity and number of violations that took place
Items Where Motion Failed (but fine was modified to $0)
  1. Fine of $5 for Unattended Campaign Materials
    • Flyers found near polling station
