Canadian
author and theorist John Ralston Saul is visiting McMaster University on Tuesday April 6th, and talking about his best-selling book. In his most recent national bestseller,
A Fair Country: Telling Truths about Canada, Saul argues that Canada is a Métis Civilization, heavily influenced and shaped by Indigenous ideas: egalitarianism, a proper balance between individual and groups, and a penchant for negotiation over violence are all general Indigenous values that Canada has absorbed.
Saul asks if Canada is a metis nation -- the small "m" here denoting the French term metis, meaning mixed -- and what this means for Indigenous and settler relations.
This event is being hosted by the Indigenous Studies Department. It is in Convocation Hall (second floor of University Hall) from 11:30AM until 1:00PM on Tuesday April 6th. It is their last event of the 2009-2010 academic year. Everyone is welcome!
