Hack'n'slashes are the same as above. Diablo 2 approaches this somewhat well. The game is pretty linear and the classes have fixed genders, but the customization is pretty vast and you end up having fun nonetheless. Recently, people kept spamming and hacking and stuff, so the game pretty much died for me. But yeah.
I believe character customization is important regardless of the game type. Unless it's a game that has no characters, like Guitar Hero or whatever.

You might want to take a look at Red Dead Redemtion (it's basically GTA IV in a Western setting), Mafia II, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Demon Souls, Dragon Age: Origins, and Mass Effect 2. The type of games you like seem to have gotten really popular this generation
I'm personally a fan of cinematic action games, MGS4 and Uncharted 2 have blown basically every other game I've played this generation out of the water.
