I also wanted to know something about French course. I'm an international student and I'm not sure if I have to take French 1AO6 or 1kO6... Can I take 1KO6 as it looks easier?

It depends on your ability as well as what you took in high school. To be eligible for French 1A06, you will have needed Grade 12 U French. As an international student, I don't know what this means to you but I'm assuming that you don't have a French background, is that correct? In such case, they might test your ability and they will place you according to your abilities. If you have no ability, you'll be put into French 1Z06 probably - Beginner's Intensive.
I took 1K06 last year, but I was only lacking Grade 11 & 12 French after taking it my entire life. So it was a really easy course.

In fact I did French in high school and use to speak French daily... That's why I'm not sure about which course I have to take. And I don't really understand what Grade 12 U means for me...Can I just pick any of the two? Will they change my class if I did not choose the right one?

Okay, well then you should choose 1A06 - they might still try to place you, I mean, I didn't have to take a test and maybe you won't either. Grade 12 U, just means, in Canada, a University preparation course in Grade 12 of highschool.
Anyway, if you think you're really good at French then you're better off with 1A06, since 1K06 is really easy.

btw fyi they changed the french requirements for courses this year
1z06 and 1ko6 were both beginners but 1k06 was not available for some students in faculties such as science (unless I guess if you email special arrangements blah). But yeah originally, from 1k06 you would take 2m06 to be equivalent to 1A06 french and then take the second year French courses that ppl who complete 1a06 would take (2bsomething or other). But from 1Z06 you have to take 2Z06 and 2M06 to be equivalent to 1A06. Obv. if you want a minor it and don't have 12 U french, the fastest way to go was with 1K06.
Anyways now it's changed, 1K06 is for those with gr 11 French and those without it go into 1Z06. (No faculty type restriction just experience related.)

I did 1K06 with only Grade 9 French, and didn't find it too bad, but I started French in Grade 1 instead of Grade 4 like a lot of other people seem to have done.

Yeah, there's a huge like... how can I say, variety of levels in the 1K06 class. A lot of people in my tutorial I thought should've been in 1Z06 but who knows. It really depends on how you can take on another language, it can be frustrating to some people.

Yep, there was someone in my class who we all thought should be in the 1A06 class because she spoke really good French, and she could speak it so fast that only the TA could understand her! lol

Lol, that must have been an easy credit for her. I sort of wish I could take french even though I'm not the best in languages, I really want to not only retain my french but improve it. I'm certain if I tried to speak french again I wouldn't be very smooth anymore.

Me too, I want to be able to speak Canada's official languages. I did well in gr 10 but that was almost 4 years ago. I was signed up for gr 11 french in my victory lap but I had forgotten a lot of tenses/conjugation so i switched out after a week. Anyways I'm going to enroll in 1z06 for this coming year. I've heard only positive reviews. Only wish I did so last year!

Pssh, who would want to know French? It's the only language that has a worse match up between pronunciation and spelling of words than English. There's also that stupid thing where no one decided to make words for two digit numbers divisible by 10 greater than sixty (i.e. 99 in French literally means "four twenty nineteen"). It also takes a lot more words to express an idea than it does in English...

Well, knowing French gives you a leg up on a lot of jobs these days. I wish I were more proficient in it. French has it's ups and downs (ugh exceptions!!) but I love it all the same.

Okay so, I'm bringing the thread to life again because.. well I'm not sure.
Anyway, has anyone taken a language in night class? I'm thinking of switching to the French 2M06 night class to make my timetable more bearable, but it's 4 hours including tutorial. Is it totally brutal?

I had english as a night course. Honestly, it depends on how interested you are in the course. I don't like english, all the terms and stuff. So I was nodding off in class. Then I only attended half the session and eventually I stopped attending.
But if you are interested, you'd stay awake and I'm pretty sure you would keep on going to class because you enjoy it.
