Learn about the Canadian College for Naturopathic Medicine!

HEY MCMASTER! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday break. Unfortunately, it's time to get back to the real world.

For those of you contemplating what to do after your undergrad degree here at McMaster, I'd like to tell you about an opportunity to learn more about what it takes to become a naturopath. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine is coming to McMaster for an information session including information on stuff like admission requirements, areas of study, etc.

WHERE: MUSC 311
WHEN: Monday January 17th @ 6:30 P.M

For those of you who don't know...
Naturopathic medicine is defined as:
  • a distinct system of primary health care that addresses the root causes of illness, and promotes health and healing using natural therapies. It supports your body's own healing ability using an integrated approach to disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention that includes:
    • acupuncture/Asian medicine
    • botanical medicine
    • physical medicine (massage, hydrotherapy, etc.)
    • clinical nutrition
    • homeopathic medicine
    • lifestyle counseling
Brought to you by Discover Naturopathic Medicine in collaboration with McMaster Alternative Health Society
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE

Alternative medicine is defined as such because it has not been proven to work or been proven not to work. Do you know what alternative medicines that have been proven to work are called? Medicine.

I'm not sure I can support 'Snake Oil Salesman' in this day and age, and frankly I'm slightly disturbed that there is an actual college for this. To understand why I feel this way please inform yourself on the AIDS crisis in South Africa, where alternative medicines have cost the lives of over 350000 people.

However, I can see the usefulness of the physical 'medicine', clinical nutrition, and lifestyle counseling options. Massage therapy is quite useful for rehabilitation of muscles after an injury and nutrition is very important, especially considering the rampant obesity rates.

Dammit, Entropy.

However, I can't not:
- acupuncture has not been conclusively proven to work, but it is possible that its toted effects as an analgesia comes from stimulation of neural mechanisms.
- botanical medicine, sure. Lots of drugs were first derived from plant extracts before they were synthesized for ease of production and use.
- physical med and clinical nutrition, sure, and lifestyle is clearly related to health, but...

LOLOLOL @ homeopathic medicine.
And even more at "schools" of homeopathic medicine. I think I cried a little inside when I saw one of those in MUSC a couple weeks ago. Couldn't believe people go to school for that shit, but there you go.

Revelation? Water does not have memory. Period. The laws of physics do not allow it. And srsly, if it remembers a couple long-lost drops of some exotic substances, why doesn't it remember all the feces and urine that it's likely been contaminated with at some point?

tl;dr

**** YEAH TIM MINCHIN
I'm not completely dismissive of naturopathy and 'alternative medicine', but... the fact that they will willingly associate themselves with homeopathy always gives me pause. Separate yourself from the complete frauds, or you can't complain when you're considered a fraud yourself.
