Linguistics 3A03
So, this is one of the upper year classes that deal primarily with phonology. The other is Linguistics 4LB3 which is advanced phonetics and phonology. Linguistics 1A03 introduces you to phonology.
For the most part, you relearn the basic content in phonetics at the beginning, as well as the phonology content you learned in first year. Then you delve deeper into phonology, using a lot of data from different languages. There is a lot of 'problem solving', using the techniques you learn throughout the chapters.
One of the biggest parts of the course was learning 'features' of all the different sounds in the IPA chart and otherwise. Features are sort of a classification system for different sounds, and a particular sound can have as little as one distinctive feature or much more.
We also learned the interface of phonology and morphology, basically how the morphology of words and words interacting together, & how that affects the phonology and phonetics of those words.
The class itself wasn't terribly difficult. In fact, it's easy once you read and go to every class. The professor, who was Dr. Yoon for 09/10 was very approachable and never hesitates to help when you ask. The material can be tricky though, and it's important to be patient and take the time to think through the problems you're given. We had homework assignments, I believe worth something like 5 percent due every two weeks or so. We had two midterms worth 15% a piece, as well as a final worth 40%.
The midterms are also tricky, but easy if you study the material. The final, for me, took the full three hours, but many people finished earlier. I got a 91 on the final, so it's doable, but you just have to take your time.
All in all, it isn't a bird course, but very easy if you do take your time to study and understand the material. 9.5/10
