Summary: "A chemical spill inside a McMaster University building prompted a large scale campus evacuation and HAZMAT response. It was a false alarm."
Two buildings at McMaster University were evacuated Tuesday afternoon following what turned out to be a false alarm over what was initially believed to be a leak of a dangerous gas. A school spokesperson confirmed just before 4 p.m. that there was no gas leak during incident, which started around 1:20 p.m. An employee purging a tank with nitrogen set of the alarm, the spokesperson said.
The incident happened in the tandem accelerator lab in Building 32, said John Verbeek, of the Hamilton Fire Department.
The Hamilton Fire Department's John Verbeek says they've since determined that no leak occured, indicating a faulty alarm. It happened as a researcher was purging a tank with nitrogen. The university adds that ordering an evacuation of the building was in keeping with protocol.
