Making Up Credits
I'm currently a first year life science student, and I'm failing a course.

I was wondering if I have a deadline to make up for these credits? Its not a requirement for any program I applied to for second year so do I have to take summer school? Or can I ask permission for a course overload for second year and take 36 units instead of 30?

-thanks

You need to make up the units by the time you plan on graduating; so the latest you could take the course is Term II of your fourth year, assuming you want to graduate that June.

You have a few options for making up the credit.

1) Summer school.
2) Overloading. However, in order to overload courses you need to have at least a 7.0 average the previous session in order to be granted the permission to overload.
3) Take a random elective online course at another school. You would have to gain permission from Mac first, and then could technically "overload" without having to ask for permission at Mac.

If I do fail a course, can I still get into a second year program- provided the failed course wasn't a prerequisite and I still have the average required?

Yes. If I remember correctly, you just need at least 24 units (of required + optional) completed to move on to level 2. However, you must complete the missing credits before you graduate.
