Malaria Bites: How MacInsiders, Trance at Mac and the McMaster Red Cross are Helping

Although hunger, poverty and AIDS are often named as the largest maladies in Africa, Malaria has a large effect on the African population as well. Malaria kills up to three million people each year, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. It can kill a child within twenty four hours of the child being bitten. Malaria is spread through vectors, specifically the mosquito. The transmission of malaria can be lowered by preventing mosquito bites. The best way to do this is through the use of mosquito nets.

The Canadian Red Cross is running a campaign to help the malaria plight: Malaria Bites. They hope to raise money to buy malaria nets, in order to stop mosquitoes from biting and thereby transferring the disease. The McMaster Red Cross chapter has been in the student centre, taking donations and asking people to buy nets. A malaria net only costs $7, and it can cover one person while they sleep. So far only a little more than forty-eight thousand nets have been purchased.

On Friday January 18th, MacInsiders and Trance at Mac and the McMaster Red Cross have combined forces and are running a club night at Quarters; where all profits are going directly to the Malaria Bites campaign. This is Trance at Mac’s last event, and it is looking to be a big one. Admission is free until 11:30, and afterwards it is only $4.

Want some more incentive to go? There are two reading week trips to Panama City being given away, and some other secret prizes too. Not a fan of trance? No worries, house and club music are going to be played as well. Going to Formaldehyde that night? A bunch of the Red Cross executive will be there, and are coming to Shivers afterwards in their formal attire.

<o></o>Bring your spare change, and have a blast while you are helping out an amazing cause. We hope to see you all on Friday. We want to raise enough money to be a donation statistic on the Canadian Red Cross website. Please help us out!
