I know the standard is 5 courses per semester.

But what happens if I take only take 4 courses in one semester because I took a few other courses in summer school?

The only reason I see in taking summer school is graduating early, if you are still expected to take 5 courses per semester, I'm just spending more money on classes that are not necessary.

Nothing really happens if you took 4 courses in one semester. As long as you're taking more than 18 units worth of courses, you're fine. I'm taking 4 courses per semester right now because I'm already fufilling my requirements for my degree so I can graduate.

if the program is offered in summer school then go for it, as long as you meet the requirements. As you get into higher years and more specialized courses, fewer are offered during the summer so it may be harder to do that depending what program you are in

it also depends if you want to go on to professional school or not; not sure what program you're in, but if you wanted to go to med school, most of them look at whether you can take a 100% course load throughout the year, rather than decreasing that load by doing summer school

but as far as I've heard, it's only for med schools?

i've heard this too. i've been looking at a bunch of masters programs and they don't have any such requirements.
