pretty much anywhere that has a volunteer program is community service.

Except I'm not sure if SWHAT and poster monkeys counts.
Volunteering in a hospital or with some after-school program would be community service though. There are loads of volunteer opportunities on campus.

If you're a first year going into residence you can volunteer as a FLIRC (Floor Level IRC)

jhan: not use machinery? that's... strange... to say the least. I never had that rule

goelk: stuff like volunteering at elderly homes or working at a soup kitchen and feeding the homeless. Helping out at a church functions or at a kid's camp.

I personally worked with my church and at this art gallery in my area for their summer camp.

And yes, they qualify as extracurriculars.

Yeah, the office had an entire seminar on volunteering and one of the rules was that we weren't allowed to use machinery. So if we wanted to do grocery shopping for elderly people, we weren't allowed to use a car.

Ohh That's really interesting.. I remember there was something like that about the 40 hours of community service in highschool as well.. But it was just a warning type of thing.. not an actual rule..

wow...this is actually amazing coz there is no such thing as community service here in India and one of the primary reasons why I didn't get selected to few of the colleges I applied in US!!

Just to absolutely clear, I was talking about highschool and not university. I'm unsure if there are any rules for university volunteering.

I think my school was too focused on catholic service to even care about any other community service. it was kind of sad, really.

LOL. so if you wanted to go grocery shopping for the elderly, you'd have the walk?? strange...

Really? I'm pretty sure all schools require 40 hours of community service to graduate. Isn't it ordered by the government?

jhan523- I think she meant that they pushed them towards catholic service AS their community service instead of other types of volunteerwork

Ah ok, that would make a lot more sense.

And thanks for clarifying your post as well. It makes sense that University students would at least have the ability to drive in any type of volunteerwork and such.
