Math 1aa3
I am currently signed up for Math 1A03 and 1B03. I saw some people on this forum signed up for Math 1AA3 (calculus for science II). Should I takes this third math course?

If you want to do upper year math courses (most, I think just financial math requires one) require both first year calculus and linear algebra. So, if you are interested in math, I'd say yes take 1AA3 as well.

Thanks!! So taking 1A03 alone doesn't count as "first year calculus"? Or do I need to take both 1A03 and 1AA3?

If your program doesn't require it then you don't need to.

However it is a nice course to take. I found it easier then 1a03 and got an easy 11 in it.

what you learn (by memory):

-parametric equations (i found the hardest part but it is a small part of the course)
-differential equations (very basic and easy ones)
-improper integrals
-series and sequences (this makes up the bulk of the course but if you memorize the rules to each type of series then it is easy to well in)
-a little bit of multivariable calculus (fairly easy)

The prerequisites for upper year math courses include Math 1AA3.

I found this course easier than Math 1A03. You cover fewer topics but spend longer on each so you have more time to help your understanding. In 1AA3, basically at the beginning of lots of sections you'll be super confused and feel lost, but once you start doing the problems or re-read your notes/textbook and make sense of it then you'll find it easy.

As long as you do that AS YOU COVER THE TOPICS and make extra use of the help centre. Don't leave it to before your final exam. I know that sounds extremely obvious, but just...don't.

A good strategy (that I used) in first year Math courses is to attend all the lectures, and listen to the professor's initial explanation of the algorithm you'll take to solve the problem.

After that, try solving the sample problems you go over in lecture on a sheet of paper as the professor solves them on the board. You'll find that sometimes, you figure it out before the professor even finishes.

Maybe it just works because I had Dr. Barto for both 1A03 and 1AA3, because that's how he went over his subjects, but I would assume the other professors do it similarly, as we had a substitute professor one day who did the exact same thing.

Anyone kind enough to post the course outline for this course showing the topics covered?

We actually didn't get one actual handout. The professor just goes over it on the first day, and posts it on Avenue2Learn site for the course, which is now taken down so I can't send you a copy.

I believe we went over:
  • 7.8 - Improper Integrals
  • 9.1-9.5 - Differential Equations
  • 11.1-11.11 - Infinite Series and Sequences
  • 10.1-10.4 - Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates
  • 14.1-14.8 - Functions with Several Variables
For our term, the marking scheme was:
  • Midterm 1 = 25% depending on whether you did WebAssign or not
  • Midterm 2 = 25% depending on whether you did WebAssign or not
  • WebAssign = 0% or 10% depending on whether you do them or not
  • Exam = 50%
^I'm not absolutely sure about the marking scheme. Either the midterms become worth less due to WebAssign, or it's the exam. Can someone correct me on this?

We got an outline of Avenue.

Webassign reduces each midterm by 5%. That's how they did it this year. Exam is worth 50% for everyone.

Edit: we also went over sequences lol.

Yeah, I remember, but I didn't save the outline. Thanks for correcting me, though. You're right.

I'll edit my post now.

last year's exam was like multiple choice / easy short answers. and they gave us 3 hours for it. It was easy enough to be done in 30 minutes too.

Would 1LS3 prepare you enough for 1AA3?

Take math 1a03, you don't learn much in math 1ls3. The topics in 1aa3 that are considered as prerequisites are deeply covered in math 1a03 whereas you barely skim the surface in math 1ls3 (integration for example). Nearly 2/3 of math 1ls3 is high school review. It's a useless course unless you have very minimal math background.
