I took 1LS3 and found it pretty much a rerun of grade 12 just a little bit more detail seeing as the assignment questions and tutorial were pretty similar to the test questions ( except test 3 :S ). I regretted not taking 1a03 because i'm continuing in biochem. But if you're just taking it because you have to, don't trouble urself and take the 1ls3

If you want a high GPA and you're worried that the math 1a03 is going to bring it down, then i suggest to just take the math 1a03 in the summer. Physics 1B03 has to be done by the end of second year in bio chem and i personally think math 1a03 would have helped me do better in 1b03 :S. So i believe that's pretty much the only component of biochem that could have really used the math. Tht's just in my opinion though.

Physics 1B03 didn't have too much calculus IIRC. Just a couple (easy) integrations and derivatives.

If you're not good at Math, you may find 1A03 challenging. 1LS3 is generally considered a lot easier, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take 1A03, especially if you're planning on taking 1AA3.

I think it's better the other way around.. With math during the school year you have ALOT of support, it's unbelievable. With physics 1b03 (im taking it right now) it's pretty much the same amount of support.

Only if you want to continue on with math as an elective

To be honest though, even if you realize you need to terms of calculus, you can take 1LS3 then 1LT3, if you realize you need it or want to take it later on.

@Jeremy: Do schools actually ask for specific calculus courses? For example, if they require 2 semesters of calculus, can you take 1LS3->1LT3? It doesn't make sense to me that they would ask for Math 1AA3 =/..

But definitively make sure with the professional school that those courses are accepted as equivalents. I don't believe waterloo accepts Math 1LS3 for their optometry program, but then again they only require 1 Calculus course.

@Sara: It depends on the content of the calculus course. They aren't just looking for general calculus, they want to make sure you know a certain level. It's like the same thing with Ethics. Waterloo says "Ethics" but they want something related to the field of medicine. That's why you have to take Philos 2D03 and I can't take the level I philos course.

Take 1LS3 if you're going to continue in life sci.

1A03 is not difficult but I hear that 1LS3 is a bird course. Make your life easier. If you want to take another math after 1LS3, they have 1LT3 now as others have said.

I would check with professional schools but generally unless they have specified a specific course, they would accept 1LT3 the same as 1AA3.

They are antirequistes and I don't know of any courses that have 1AA3 and not 1LT3 as prerequisite options.

I emailed Waterloo, "MATH 1LS3 Calculus for the Life Sciences I will satisfy the calculus prereq." (for Optometry)

That's good, I hope you aren't just applying to Waterloo though. It's extremely competitive being the only optometry school in English in Canada. You need 75% to be considered and the lowest they accepted two years ago was like 84%. Not to mention that is also depends on your OAT score, extracurricular, interview and recommendations.

Take a look at this: http://www.optomcas.org/

That's the application for the States. But there is a link to prerequisites. I would however search each university to make sure the prerequisites are updated.
