McMaster Annual Job Shadow Week (2009)

McMaster Annual Job Shadow Week

The annual Job Shadow Week allows students to meet career professionals for a workplace observation. Students spend half a day or a full day with a job shadow host to learn about the day to day realities of a career and gain valuable advice while growing their professional networks. The Job Shadow Week provides students with on site exposure to work environments that include observation and interviewing of professionals related to their careers of interest. Job Shadowing provides an opportunity to learn about careers outside of the classroom.

The 2009 Annual Job Shadow Week will take place on November 2- November 6, 2009. On-line sign up begins Tuesday October 13 at 9:00AM. Placements are first come, first serve. Please note that you are only allowed to sign up for a maximum of one job shadow!

Sample Job Shadows include: Marketing Manager, GIS Specialist, Coordinator Social Work Services, Teachers, Electrical Engineers, Newspaper Reporter, Physiotherapist, Clinical Trials Radiation Therapist, and many more.

For a complete list of the job shadowing opportunities along with the dates and times, check out this link:
https://jobshadow.mcmaster.ca /career.../jobshadow.cfm

Yes I believe so, but I mean one day of class vs. the experience of knowing that the career you shadowed is/isn't what you want to do in life.

If you're really interested in one of the careers, I would take the day off. Get the notes off a friend and if you have a midterm, there are a few dates for each profession I believe so you can try to take the one when you are the free-est.

Also: Note the location (you'll have to get there yourself) so plan well ahead of time!

Umm..Are you supposed to get a confirmation email of some sort after signing up? All it did was go back to the first page.

EDIT

nvm...lol Apparently you have to agree to the first form and then sign up (thought it was supposed to be all at once)

Yes you should get a confirmation email (though it might take a while to send to you)

Go back and check the list. If the one you signed up for still there, then your application didn't go through and you should sign up again.

Most Job Shadow Hosts are mentors from careerLINKS (McMaster's mentorship program)

If you weren't able to get into a Job Shadow time, you could always contact a mentor through careerLINKS and set up an information interview with them. They might even let you job shadow for the day.

There are over 300 mentors so I'm sure you'll find an occupation that interests you.

Duarch, huzaifa47 all say thanks to Kathy2 for this post.
