McMaster Personal Student Webpage
Hey, after seeing how most CAS students took advantage of server space for their own webpage, I was wondering if every department offered their students a webpage that they could use; i.e: www.cas.mcmaster.ca/~macid. If they do offer it, how does one start one up?

Thanks

With people in software and comp. sci, you log into your home folder on the Mills server using SSH and create a folder (don't remember what it's supposed to be called... hopefully someone here can help), and then anything inside it is hosted as a website.

The mills server address is mills.mcmaster.ca, with the username being your macid and the password being your mugsi password.

Pretty easy to set it up. If your in CAS:

You can use whatever FTP client you want. I personally use FileZilla which is really easy to use.
To log on you need to use MacID and pass is your student #. Not your regular password you use to log into mugsi but you can change it to be that aswell if you want. The folder you need to upload files to is "public_html" in your macid directory. Your homepage is named index.html.

If you get stuck check this out: http://www.cas.mcmaster.ca/support/faq/index.html; (Personal Webpage FAQ) Wouldn't believe the time I spent searching for this haha. You can PM and I'll try my best to help too!

If you not in CAS contact your dept. I guess and ask. I'm sure the process would be similar though?

lol sorry to be a noob but how would a CAS student start this exactly?

Something along these lines:

Use putty.exe to get onto the mills.mcmaster.ca server
Type in macid and password to arrive in macid directory? Is public_html supposed to be right there?

Edit: Anyone in ECE know if there is some server space for us?

For me public_html wasn't there. I had to create it in my home dir. Also my file permissions were pretty strict so I had to change those as well. Otherwise people wouldn't be able to view the webpage. You can do all this if you read that FAQ I linked above. Explains it better than I can at least lol.

You can use Putty but its a lot harder to upload files if you don't know what your doing. You have to use commands whereas FileZilla you just drag and drop files. BTW the host name is mills.cas.mcmaster.ca. Don't know if cas makes a difference but I was shown that way.

Can't you also setup a webpage via your MUSS account? I'm not really good with tech stuff, so I don't how it works exactly but I know if you log into your email, there's an option that says "Website" and I think you can create a page there too.

Heh yeah man students will be getting a new email system either Google or Microsoft. The MSU has been allowed to help make the decision on which vendor we want. We met with reps from both companies earlier this month.

Google = Gmail/Google Apps

That's awesome! I was following the SRA's proposal for a new system a few months back, but I never read anymore updates after that. I'm glad it's going through all the way!!

Hey it's honestly great to hear that people want this to happen and are excited. In the upcoming weeks we will be releasing a survey to all students where you can help choose what email provider you want. I will make sure to keep everyone posted until that point but for all those interested when that survey comes out Vote! It is our way to show the school that students want a change and the results could dictate which service we get.
