McMaster Students for Health Innovation (MSHI) will be holding a FREE health innovation seminar on Tuesday, January 25th, 2010 between 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m at MDCL 3024.

This January, our theme highlights innovation and initiatives in the field of Pediatric Mental Health. The speaker speaking at the seminar is Dr. Ruth Pickering.

FREE LUNCH WILL BE SERVED.

The goal of this seminar is to bring together influential scholars and public figures that play an essential role in our Canadian Health care system.

A) Dr. Ruth Pickering, M.D.

Dr. Ruth Pickering is a a retired Child Psychiatrist and community leader in the Hamilton community who has dedicated her life to children. She founded the Under the Willows Summer Initiative for children who have experienced abuse, trauma, neglect and deprivation. Through the metaphor of the garden, children Under the Willows celebrate their interdependence within the natural world as the context for healing. By re-focusing from disabilities and problems to possibilities and support, the artists/participants of Willow assist each child to overcome obstacles. Within this context, the artists, the materials, and the physical-emotional context of ability, creativity, cooperation and support of each other provides Under the Willows with an environment in which children can extend themselves and create. They can experience themselves as whole unique persons with talents and offerings not only in the Garden, but also in their lives outside it!
