Not during the Fall semester. The only reading week we get is in February for a week.

No, this is university, you are supposed to manage your own time.

In first year your midterms are so spread out that there's not even a point of getting a week off specifically to study for midterms, because where would they put it? Midterms basically run from the end of September to the middle-end of November.
Don't expect anything better when it comes to exams, either. I believe you get one official day off to study.

I don't see how the two are related or mutually exclusive. We get reading week in term 2; what now? Is term 2 suddenly for baby-feeding? I see that phrase being thrown around for almost every reason and I feel like hitting people with a pan.

From what I remember, term 2's reading week was implemented university wide (throughout ontario at least) due to the higher rate of suicides that occur. Most universities north of us have a break in first term too in order to prevent this and reduce the length of separation from family, etc.
As an aside, if you or anyone you know are having trouble with midterms, become severely stressed and need someone to talk too McMaster has excellent resources you can talk too including the Student Wellness Center and various clubs on campus.

Didn't some rep last year introduce a movement to have an autumn reading week...TB implemented long after I graduate, of course?

Uh. I think you're talking about the current MSU president. I think her main selling point was the fall reading week.

It's not in any way realistic to expect her to get it implemented over the summer in time for fall 2012. I believe the plan is for fall 2013.

Fall break, not fall "reading week." It can come in many forms; no one knows how it'll look like yet.

Essentially what most people get out of it is: time off. In that sense, isn't it the same thing?
