I just heard recently how StarCraft 2 won't have LAN mode. That's pretty bad, on top of releasing the game on three separate disks. I don't even know if I want it anymore...

I don't see why the loss of LAN mode is such a big deal. It mainly prevents using copied cds/cd cracks to play the game. The new battle net is supposed to be awesome, so why would you even need a LAN mode?

You can always just hook it up to internet at LAN parties too.

LAN is useful in the cases where you don't have internet. All you have to do is have a portable router and voila! You can play LAN anywhere.

No, not having LAN is a huge issue. Say that 10 people are at one house and want to play StarCraft with eachother. This isn't a problem because everyone can just hook up to a local switch.

Now with StarCraft 2, everyone has to connect to the battlenet servers, which may be half way across the country. Pretty much any internet connection will die from that many people trying to connect over it.

What I'm hoping is that battlenet is just used for allowing everyone to connect to eachother, and then from there traffic from players on the same network gets sent locally rather than all the way to the server.

Regardless, this complicates the hell out of LAN parties...

Assuming that router has a modem with an internet connection attached to it with reasonable speeds...

The internet is way slower than LAN, as we can see with DC++.

We successfully played together by just connecting the laptops to the router. the router wasn't connected to the internet.

The lag will be unbelievable, assuming of course all data is sent back to the server before getting to other players.

I don't know where you're connecting to battle net from.....but I always ping like 8-20ms. So latency is definitely not a big issue.

Well ya, but that's LAN. Blizzard is saying that they're taking that out of StarCraft 2 to insure you are connected to the internet to just play against anybody.

Yeah, but I was referring to the Greg's post asking why LAN is such a big deal.

Lan is a huge issue. If you consider students even at Mac that will be living on campus; playing over bnet will be murder (if not possible? I wouldn't know, but I do recall some xbox Live issues last year). LAN is essential for any game that wants to provide multiplayer, and that's just LAN tournaments aside.

Then perhaps in that scenario, I might have been wrong. But it's still an essential part of playing multiplayer games.

Anyways, enough of the thread derailment.

UO >>>>> Any MMORPG.

End of story <3
