Straight from the mountaintops and downtown streets of Central Japan, this year’s McMaster Theatre and Film Program brings to the campus a theatrical cult classic inspiration of enormous proportions. GODZILLA!, written by Yasuhiko Ohashi and translated by Cody Poluton is the first installation of the School of the Arts’ Honours Peformance Series, presented January17 and 18th.
Cody Poulton states “Every parent worries about the kind of man their daughter will bring home” and in this play we emphasize, exaggerate and mock those anxieties by turning the suitor into one of the biggest boogeymen of all!! But don’t be fooled, “this play is first and foremost a love story, a romantic comedy about a young Japanese woman who falls in love with a giant lug.”.
Set in the hypermedia 1980s, fourth year director Nea Reid engages with physical collages, a slapstick sense of space and time and a mix of cultural references in a playful (and somewhat absurdist) way. Reid states “it’s an ambitious project about great love…but isn’t that what a fourth year theatre project is all about” Aiming at the universal language of theatre, Reid brings this fantastical narrative to the stage with a relevant discussion of the westernized pop culture’s dominance on tradition and culture.
GODZILLA! showcases the talent of university and professional actors from Hamilton and Toronto to China, the Czech Republic, Philippines and Japan. Completing the theatre family community an equally experienced production team with international collaboration all under the direction of Reid, whose work has spanned worldwide. This intercultural production has developed a new community at McMaster, one which bridges cultural and societal expectations of theatre both on and off stage.
So listen closely for the sounds of resonant footsteps, feel the reverberating shockwaves from the ground, and quickly get on board the ship Katori as GODZILLA! Steps on the McMaster stage.
The Honours Performance Series production of GODZILLA!, sponsored by The School of the Arts runs January 17th and 18th with matinee and evening performances at 12:30 and 8:00 respectively. Admission to the show is free.
