Barry Allen, Brian Garrett and Stefan Rodde all of the philosophy department are all very knowledgeable based on my experiences with them. They're all very sharp.

+1

I took a course with him as an elective. After only talking to him in person once, without even introducing myself, then following up with an email, he handed back my midterm directly to me a few days later without asking my name. Bear in mind that this is a class of ~100 students.

For the same class, he also gave the majority of the class very useful advice on projects that we were doing that were not necessarily in his field of expertise. Given the size of the class, he was giving advice to probably 60+ groups.

He's also one of the best instructors (technically isn't a prof) you will ever have at Mac.

Also, Dr. Stan Pietruszczak (had to Google search that one ) seems uncannily smart in the old school prof way. He just gets up and lectures about Dynamics or Geotechnical Engineering. He never uses PowerPoint and barely uses Avenue.

remember "intelligent" doesn't mean talking over students heads and just acting the most "professor-like". I feel like the teachers that can hold a normal sounding conversation with you will be left out. A more extreme example would probably be Janicki. About 12 people ended up showing up to his classes, he has a thick accent, mutters, stutters, and coughs. Yet he is a leading researcher and I have no doubt he is actually one of the smartest people in the school. Algorithms is one of those areas where you can't just sound smart or discover something by fluke. You've gotta be a friggin genius to come up with that stuff (hence the utter failure of most people in that course ).

There is one professor in physics or chemistry or something who worked at a post-grad school with Stephen Hawking. I can't remember his name but I'm guessing he's pretty smart.

The smartest prof I ever had was Flynn from Pol Sci. He used to be a lawyer so he knew everything about it. There wasn't a question we could throw at him that he didn't know the answer to.
