Music 2Z03: Intro to digital audio.
Hey guys!

So I siged up for this course, but since I've done that they put a more detailed description of the class in the calendar:

Basic electroacoustic theory; introduction to techniques of digital music composition, emphasizing MIDI applications; computer music notation; aesthetics of music composition. Students will be expected to produce at least one original work. Prior experience with computers and/or music composition is strongly encouraged, though not required. Independent studio work will be required.

I'm in second year music so I'm allowed to take the class, but that description has me terrified, LOL. Anyone who has taken the course before, thoughts? How hard was it? Am I going to die?

Thanks

I got excited for a second there. I thought it was another Math 2Z03/2ZZ3 flamage thread since I first glimpsed the title as Math 2Z03 instead of Music 2Z03.

Sorry for the hijack.

Music production is awesome. So so so much fun and so interesting once you figure it out.

This would be such a sweet course to take as an elective sometime. I'll have to look that up.

Hahah, I have a little bit of expereience working with free and pretty simple programs such as audacity. And I am a music major, so know a fair bit about music and little about composition. I just don't have any experience with complicated programs or any instruction in the area. I'm just worried I've bit off a bit too much, not sure!

This is cross-listed as multimedia right? I took this course last year with Dr Ogborn. It was pretty interesting but as a music major I don't think you'll find it very related to what you're doing for your degree. We did three projects. The first one was a radio play, so you went into the studio and recorded a script that you had to write, and then used Cubase to put in sound effects and atmosphere. The second was an acousmatic composition, which was basically transforming every day sounds to make them unrecognizable, and then putting them together in an interesting way. This was the most interesting and most challenging project. The third was a soundscape, and you had to take a portable recorder outside and record something, and then put it into Cubase and play with it. They get more and more challenging and require more knowledge of Cubase. The tutorials were supposed to teach the program but I found they weren't that helpful. That said, Dr O is really nice and he'll help you out whenever you need it.
