Sounds like a pretty viable plan. MUSS is just sucking the life out of our "technologically-advanced" university.

i dont think mcmaster would go through so much trouble just to make a couple people happy.. i would understand if they wouldnt give us the option of POP... but since they do, you are not forced to look at their crappy UI.. and also you dont have to log in everytime you want to check your email..

I don't see Mac ever "outsourcing" to Gmail. There are many issues that come up with Google storing email on their servers (most likely in the USA). I'd imagine research information would be especially sensitive.

Does anyone know how/where MUSS stores emails? Is it any more secure than what Google could offer?

And I'm sure Google has a customer confidentiality clause of some sort, otherwise, who would do business with them?

Google is used by the White House. I think that qualifies their security lol.

MUSS email would be stored on Mcmaster's own servers. Google would be storing it on their servers, likely in the USA. I'm sure there are NDAs and the like with Google, but I've heard of some research guidelines that are very restrictive with who can access the data and that it must remain in Canada under the university's control. Otherwise it could have been considered as having been exported.

That's what I've heard at least...

kokosas says thanks to gregster for this post.

I very seriously doubt they outsource their email to Google, and I haven't been able to find anything referencing that. They use an inhouse Exchange architecture.

The system is definately not user friendly and looks very old and clunky. I use it 24/7 so I'm pretty satisfied; I know my way around it. But at first it was very confusing, not user friendly at ALL.
