I Need Music!

I Need Music!

There has been some recent-ish discussion on the forum about music. For myself at least, I get bored with music. I have lots, but I need to constantly be adding more as otherwise I get restless.

Earlier, I had posted a thread on rap and hip hop music, and had asked for some suggestions. Similarly, Chad posted a thread on favourite summer music. Both of us got feedback, but would still like more. *hint hint*

Now if you are ever in the same situation as the two of us, I suggest you check out music-map. Maybe I'm not down with all the cool stuff all of you young whippersnappers are, but it's not my fault I'm nearly geriatric.

All you need to do is type in a band or artist, and similar ones will pop up. Some you may have heard of, some you may have not. What else is also neat is that whatever band you click on leads you to another list of other bands they are similar to.

Anyways, some of my housemates told me about the site, and I found some bands I have never heard about, and thus have new music and am therefore happy once again.

But apparently there is no one similar to Jackalope, which makes me sad.

That is an awesome site. I love finding new bands, it seems on the radio and such they only play the same artists and songs over and over. I'm the same way about getting bored with the music i have. Whenever i get new music i listen to it so much that it gets old really fast and then I have to find something new.

Music-map is awesome, and so are the other sites associated with it. They're all part of the gnod project.

There's http://www.gnovies.com/ for movies, and http://www.gnooks.com/ for books.

You know, in case you're looking for movies and books too

It's not really a recommendation, the way it works is people contribute movies they watch. So, say Clerks and Clerks 2 and Harry Potter. Because they were mentioned together there is a "link" between the 3. The site then figures out how many other people watch those three too and depending on the number puts them closer together or farther away.

Reminds me a lot of http://www.last.fm ... type in a song or artist, and on their page they have real recommendations based on musical taste and style... not just what other people who have that song also have in their playlists

Another is Pandora, an amazing system that matches you up with songs of similar style and beat, tempo, etc. You type in a song and it will play that song and then build a playlist after it with similar sounding songs. Its neat, but recently they had to block out people that arent visiting it from the US (geo blocking). Really sucks, cause it was a cool service.

Ha, I am so bookmarking that site

@Chad: I like last.fm...their service is great. Never heard of Pandora though...

@lorend: If you ever need new music in the future, try deezer.com too. Their site offers an option for registered members to create iTunes-like playlists that can be saved to your account and replayed whenever you want. It also offers radio stations similar to Yahoo's music service, so you can pick a genre and listen to all the artists/songs that fall into that category.

But be warned that if you're on dialup, it wreaks havoc with your connection.

For watching movies I highly suggest http://www.surfthechannel.co m (they have TV and movies)

As for music, deezer is nice but I've gotten used to using http://www.seeqpod.com because it seems to find more results.

I've heard that the iTunes Movie Rental service is now available in Canada. You can rent a movie off iTune and watch it on your computer or ipod.. or if you have an Apple TV box you can stream it over to your tv.
