The textbook! Quality what matters. Just don't be afraid of asking questions if you don't understand anything. Trust me, I had optional guide, which confused you even more. Just read the assigned lessons and understand what you doing. Also, practice the assigned questions in the book and posted sample tests. Try to do quizzes by yourself and don't copy off someone else. If you're stuck somewhere. In thode library there are TA office hours everyday. Good luck
Easier said than done though!

There are also Professor Office Hours incase you want them to explain something instead of the TAs.
There are tons of resources available to you and, in my opinion, TAs and Professors are much much better than any book. Interaction is what makes them better.

If all of the above (which are free by the way) fail to help you. Buying optional books should be your last resort, especially when there are so many supplementary learning opportunities that are available to you.

I'd pretty much never advise buying an optional textbook. There are so many other options--prof/TA office hours, help centre, friends, your actual textbook, google/wikipedia. If you've actually exhausted all of these resources, then there is likely a book at the library that can help you--they might even have the optional textbook there, so you don't have to spend money on it. More than likely, though, you won't exhaust all of the resources available to you, especially for first-year chem--there is so much help available!

Lol, there's way more than 9 kids who got a 12. It's definitely possible and easier than some other courses, ie bio 1a03 with jacobs.
