However, from what I've been reading on forums, a lot of people are trying to get spots for this course.
So, my question is should I keep Physics 1LS3 and hope that I can get a spot in Physics 1B03 later in the year? Or should I switch out of physics entirely and try again in my second year?
Thanks!

I was in the same situation, except I was in 1B03 and then the advisors told me to switch to 1L03, so I did, and then part way through first term realized how stupid it would be to take 1L03 (this was after my experience with math 1LS3, which the advisors told me to take instead of 1A03, and was a colossal waste of time).
I went back to see the advisors in November-ish because 1B03 was full, and they were against me switching into it, wouldn't open up a spot for me. They told me that people would fail 1L03 first term and therefore have to drop 1B03, and spots would open up around December, and to come back and see them in January if I still couldn't get in. I was able to get a spot a couple of weeks later.
So yeah, keep 1L03 and one way or another you'll be able to switch it to 1B03.
