Physics 1b03 lab exemptions for retake
I heard that if you are retaking physics 1b03 this summer that you CANNOT be exempt from labs. Why is this?

I had thought previously that there would be some kind of exemption. The prof said the labs were pretty full to so it would advantageous of them to let the retakers be exempt. I have not bought the lab manual yet, so I don't know if the labs have changed, but Im pretty sure they are EXACTLY the same.. what is the point in repeating it?

I really don't want to repeat these labs so if anyone has some advice, please let me know. Would going to an academic ad visor or the dean even help?

Out of curiosity why do they give lab exemptions to re-takers? If you failed the course shouldn't you have to do all the course work over again?

Lab marks are separate from midterm/exam marks. Most people do well on the labs.

I know for chemistry if you are re-doing the course, they look at your past lab marks, and if you had successfully completed all the labs with a 75% or above, they just transfer the grade.

I don't know if this changes for people who have failed the course, or are upgrading marks.

Are you sure that the labs are the same? Cause I just finished 1B03 and the labs during the normal semester were 2 hours/week. And since summer usually covers one week worth of material in one day, that would mean that you would have multiple labs per week.

But even though I think the labs might be structured differently, I'm not sure why they are making you re-take them. It could possibly be due to the fact that the labs build on material from lectures and are specifically tested on the exam (introduced to formulas on the labs that were never mentioned in class but tested on the exam) and if you are exempt from the labs, you might not remember that material. Also could be since you didn't do well in the course, they believe you need to re-do labs in order to improve your understanding of the material. Good luck with uncertainties!!
