I just recently signed my donor card...it says on the website that I should also register with the Ministry of Health (by following instructions on the website) in addition to having a donor card.

I just did this last weekend. You just have to swab your cheek in four places and you're done Made me feel good since my iron level is too low to donate blood.

Ooooh I didn't know you couldn't donate blood if you have low iron. I guess that means I can't then, I was thinking about doing it at the next blood drive.

they want an iron level of 12.5 (I don't know what that means) but they do check it on the spot and you can boost your iron level beforehand by eating iron rich foods a week or two before.

Yeah, I can't give blood either. Low iron ftl.

Nila, it's really hard to boost your iron levels in a week or two. Especially if you don't eat any meat. Non-heme iron is harder for your body to absorb.

This past summer I was rejected because I had dropped in iron though I donated last week because I brought it back up. Essentially, I take over-the-counter iron supplements. If it's prescribed you can't donate it. Personally, I have found that EuroFer works wonders so if you're low on iron take that. I'm a hardcore blood donor so I work hard to maintain that iron!

I donated blood for the first time today. I thought I may get rejected because I have vegetarian blood and apparently 10% of all females have low iron, but my iron levels were pretty good.

iamcanadian says thanks to sinthusized for this post.

There are certain days I think September 11th is one of them when they have a temporary clinic in CIBC Hall. If you check the official website and type mcmaster or hamilton it'll tell you which days they're on campus.

I've been told in the past that my blood has been low in iron...can the clinic check that for me? What about your blood type I've been trying to find out what my blood type is for ages, but haven't yet :(
