It doesn't mean that if it's used by most school that it's right. And the author is right, there is a big difference. A 12 point can bring your average down.

12 point scale : Notice the word scale... 90-100 : 12, but other grades are only 3% apart...

This is a big issue, especially for engineers who need to have a certain average to go to second year.

If someone has a 98 in a course, why would he/she be put on the same level as someone who had a 90 ????

And like Entropy said, in the registrar, they keep the grades as 12 points. Which is bad, in both conversion and for other schools to look at...

My solution is to bring everything to a 4 GPA. Which is the same as having it in percentage, because after doing complicated math : Between 1 and 2 = 25%, so you don't have that crap of a drop in the average.

Oh God, really? You seriously need to think through your own suggestions for a minute.

Let's say that 90-93 = 12, 93-96 = 13, 97-100 = 14, since you just said you're upset that 12 has a 10% scale.

Now for every student who doesn't get an average above 97% they will no longer have a perfect GPA. I.e., pretty much no one in the entire school will ever have a perfect GPA.

How the HELL does that help us out?

Even if you get 5 marks between 90-93 (which is fairly plausible) your GPA would be 12/14, far from perfect. Is this really what you want? Or are you complaining because you don't know what the hell you're talking about?

Actually, it is UNFAIR to someone who has higher than 95 for most his classes to be PUT in equal level with others.

I am not one of those students but they should get what they need.

If someone has 12s in every single course but only because he gets 90 in every single one. And another student has 100 in every single course. WHY SHOULD THEY BE ON EQUAL LEVEL ?

Same reason why people getting a 0% are equal to people getting a 45%?

Why stop there? Why not make it so that a perfect GPA is 100 in every class, and a 99% is less than a perfect GPA? Or a 99.9% is less than a perfect GPA?

HEY!1!!! that student who got 99.9% isn't as smart as the student who got 100%1!!!!! they should have different GPA's!

See, the problem is that even the percentage based system is too inaccurate. Why the heck should the guy who got 90.01% be called equal to the guy who got 90.02%?

But I think I have a solution.

Let's move to a billion-point grading system.

lol.

To be fair, I'm kinda hating the grading system right now. Another percent on the exam (literally, 1 percent, or, since the prof rounds, 0.5) and I would have gone up a level...sucks.

Maybe I'm old school, but I like percentages. Simple, easy to distinguish. Bands lump too many people together, and I for one like to know exactly where I stand, ie am I an 85 or an 87?

A fail is a fail, calculated in average or not, the person has to retake the course.

There's a difference between whatever the **** you are doing to get 10% higher than someone and .01%.
