 It's a test databank basically. So yes, there may be 500 questions in total but the midterms consist only of 40 questions each (2 midterms total). 
10% of the questions (8-10 questions) come derived from the textbook readings (simple enough...you might think, but not often the case)
the remaining 80% of the questions come from the test bank, and yes - these are taken word for word. 
So, theoretically, if you really only cared to go through class notes and the online testbank, you could get 80% on the midterms without reading the textbook. 
The textbook readings are brutally long, and for me this was the hardest part of the course. 
The course itself, however, is extremely interesting.
