Psychology major?
I really want to be a first you student at mac next year and I am hoping to be a psych major (B.A). Can someone tell me what the general first year is like? I'm not very good at math and I am only taking functions and maybe data this year. As well, if you are in the program, can you tell me how you find it? If it is extremely hard or the focuses on course (eg. science and math etc.). This is a big focal point on whether or not I will go to mac because my father wants me to go to york because he thinks I will have too much of a challenge at mac and not be able to go to masters. I fell in love with mac as soon as i visited but my dad thinks campus is not important. My average is currently about mid 80s. Thanks

Hey, McMaster is awesome! First year was a blast and the workload should not be too hard even with maths and sciences. There are a LOT of opportunities to get help all semester either with Profs or Teaching Assistants or Tutors or Students. You can even join some study groups. You just have to make sure that you don't fall behind on your work. I took Chem first year and it was doable even with Calculus. Hope this helps.

Hey! Are you planning to do an Honours B.A in psych? If you are, it is a 4 year program, and requires math 1k03, if you get a B ( I am pretty sure it is a B) you go on to take Math 1M03 which is REQUIRED for Hounours psych. If you get less then a b, you have to take math 1f03 and then take math 1M03.. so three math courses. I highly highly highly recommend you take grade 12 advanced functions. If you do, you do not have to take math 1k03!! You can go on and JUST take math 1m03!! However, if you choose not to do an honours program, ( so you so a B.A psych) that is three years. I am pretty sure most graduate programs require 4 years. However a B.A psych would NOT require math! If you plan on doing an Honours psych, you will have to have math 1M03. Do not be afraid of math though, if you get the extra help from profs, help center, and you do your homework you will be fine!

Oh I forgot to add, I love the psych courses here!! I am more interested in science based psychology courses such as sensory processes or neuroscience but if you are not a fan of biology based psych courses there are other courses such as personality, child development etc. Also I think there is a degree offered call B.A honours Social psychology, you do not have to to take science based courses as well no math is required!

I strongly suggest to ignore all of the rumours you have heard about math 1M03, if you have an 80 average and a decent mark in data/calculus, say around 75? You will do fine. A lot of first year students complain about math 1M03 and find it difficult. However, these are the same people that do not do their homework, so again, ignore the rumours you have heard about Math 1M03!

math 1m03 is not hard... I know people who took it and said it was an easy 11.

This should help you understand all the different psychology majors offered at mac and the courses you'll have to do to complete your degree:
