Rainbows banned at Mississauga Catholic school
http://www.xtra.ca/public/Toronto/Rainbows_banned_at_Mi ssissauga_Catholic_sc hool-10262.aspx
Thoughts?
I remember hearing about the Halton Catholic ban on alliance and support groups a few months back (They don't have Nazi groups either!) and this, again, blows my mind. I went to a Halton Catholic school for elementary and high school (I'm completely nonreligious now), but this just blows my mind.
How can the public still agree to fund these bigots' schools?! Are there just enough of them in the public?
As far as I understand, gay teens have it hard enough... let alone Catholic raised teens whose parents, churches, and schools refuse to discuss it!
Just makes me FUME!
ps. thanks mod Lorend for sharing on fb

I think Brit mean the part where the OP said "bigot". To her it lumped all catholics in that category. That probably wasn't was OP meant, but the wording could use altering
on topic though, it's ridiculous. Banning the rainbow. YEP, THAT'S GONNA SOLVE SO MUCH LOL LET'S BAN BRIGHTLY COLOURED SILLY BANDZ TOO

I completely defend what I said. And it's not a few - it's the teachers (none will support a group), the bishops, the board (we don't have Nazi groups!), and many of the parents, as I read from other articles on the site (It will bring promiscuity and disease! Sex should never be discussed at school! No sex clubs!)
Ps. wikipedia's definition works for me here,
A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing race, ethnicity, nationality, inter-regional prejudice, gender and sexual orientation, homelessness, various medical disorders particularly behavioral disorders and addictive disorders and religion or spirituality.

Thing is, catholic schools in Ontario are funded by govt, i.e your taxes pays those schools.
Why do the people have to pay for such nonsense.

I understand completely what you mean when you used "bigot", but I think the one who questioned this could have been saying "don't direct this at an entire religion". I am fully against what this school did, but to call them bigots is a stretch. Just as gays should have the right to live life the way that they prefer, and we as citizens have the right to free speech, the school still has the rights to religion, thought, belief, opinion and expression, so they could argue that they are just simply exercising their constitutional right to belief. Again, I do think that this is idea is absolutely ridiculous and I think that our society is evolved enough that we should be able to move past such nonsense, but, unfortunately, it is "constitutional".

I think it's about time we stop funding the schools! They get all of these magic rules to exclude whoever they choose. @Dorey, they can believe whatever they choose, but not on my dime.
May as well ban ladies from class during their time of the month!! (But no, that would be too old-fashioned right?)
Grrrrrr I'm just to mad about this right now. At least seeing a lot of articles pop up on google about de-funding the board. Seeing that in my lifetime would make me damn happy.
@ Icecream, many children do not have a choice - their parents put them in those schools regardless of what they think. Although not "all girls are total sluts", I did have a sucky time in high school. (Although that may have been due to awkwardness, and not due to the school being catholic).

I went to a Catholic HS and played baseball. We had to pay for all of our own equipment, jerseys, and hats. We did just fine.. (Went to OFSAA three times in my four years)

That's true, I shouldn't have generalized about girls in catholic schools. But from my experience, (used to know people there), a lot of them were.
The problem is Ontarians won't demand change for anything.

you'd think they'd play their cards more wisely after the scrutiny from the whole gay/lesbian-alliance fiasco
