How did you check out the place without meeting the landlord?
When I was first looking for a place in first year, I remember getting Emails from potential landlords that explained how they had left the country but trust that I'd take care of the place (some would act extremely religious). They said they'd either mail the key or there was a key on the property for me at the place to check inside, but in all of the cases money was to be transferred .. and leases were to be signed and faxed back and forth. The price also seemed a little too good to be true.
I eventually found a bunch of websites that said that this was a scam, one of which was an Ontario site that said you should never ever ever sign a lease without meeting the landlord in person.
I'm sure you can google it yourself, but from what I remember, the scam worked out that either the locks were changed when the tenants tried to move in, or other people were already living there, with no way to recover the money.
Why don't you Email them from a different Email and see if there are any holes in their story... ? That is if you truly feel it's not a scam. I would really advise you not to sign a lease without meeting the landlord or property manager. And never give anyone other than an employer or the government your Social Insurance Number.
