Relig Studies 1b06
i'm going into business 1 and i am thinking about taking this course as an elective.

Has anyone taken this course and is this course manageable?

I took this course in my first year ('06/'07, so things might have changed), and while there were more assignments in it than my other courses, I found it manageable. We had to write three small papers per term, but we were given the topics for the papers at the beginning of the term. There were also three small tests per term which took up about 20 minutes of the class (this is including the time it took to distribute the tests and collect them), plus a midterm at the end of first semester and an exam at the end of the class.

Here's the outline from '09/'10: http://www.religiousstudies. mcmast...%20updated.pdf

It looks about the same from when I took the class, even the same professors. And Dr. Carter is amazing! One of my favourites at Mac.

It can be a fair amount of work, but with good time management it's not too bad.

After reading that outline, I'm a lot less inclined to take it as an elective fourth year. Seems like far too much work for an elective.

You might find it easy if the course was similar. Although if you can manage the workload your fine.

i took this last year. if the profs are the same pearson and carter, then it should be 3 assignments (800 - 1000 words) and 3 tests per term, a midterm and a final. since the course is divided in two it is technically 2 finals, not really a midterm. there were also certain tutorials that had assignments and presentations as well.

this is not an easy course. the first term with pearson was harder as far as testing goes but easier for essays cause they are real academic essays. carter's test are easier but her assignments were rather unclear with the expectation and not real essays. pearson's final was terrible as far as time and content (i got 48%) and carters was easy (i got 89%). both gave out questions beforehand.

there were times when i wanted to shoot myself with pearson but i feel i learned far more from her. I could actually tell you something about eastern religions. carter is far better as far as entertainment goes but western religions is a complete blur.

this class also started with about 600 students and there were days when maybe 100 showed up cause they post just about everything. both profs would intentionally help out those that came to class but those that didn't found out everything anyways.

i finished with a 9 in this class and i would think that was on the higher end. I constantly heard people talking about get 15-20% on tests, even though they were online and technically open book but fairly tight on time. your mark will largely depend on your TA. i had two and the first was way more interested in grammatical errors than content and we spent the whole time talking about life in general not our topics. the second guy didn't have a clue about the material but he tried hard and marked easy cause he knew he should not have been TAing that class.

also, this is not a class about right and wrong. its a survey of various religions and their practices and beliefs. as someone who is anti religion, i still found the information interesting even though i couldn't believe people actually believe that stuff. the only reason i took this course was cause i needed something from humanities and it was the only thing that fit into my schedule but i'm glad i did even if it sucked and was my lowest mark of the year.
