A Reminder When Posting Marketplace Items

As second term begins, I would like to remind everyone that the selling of 'McMaster property' is not allowed, as it can be considered Academic Dishonesty by the university and get you in trouble.

What is property of McMaster?
Any documents that McMaster makes and provides you including items such as: Lab Manuals, Tests, Quizzes, Exams, and Lecture Slides.

If you come across these types of items being sold on the MacInsiders Marketplace, please report them.

Things you write yourself, you own copyright to
According to McMaster's "Ownership of Student Work" policy, McMaster respects that the student owns the copyright for any material eligible for copyright which includes any essays and reports. It states that "When work that is eligible for copyright is submitted to meet a requirement of a course, the University acknowledges the student's ownership of the copyright, but places the following conditions on the submission of the work to meet course requirements. The original physical document becomes the property of the University. This applies particularly to examination answer scripts, and may also be applied to term papers and other course work."

It is your responsibility to protect plagiarizing of your work
Note that the Academic Dishonesty document states that you must "protect academic work such as assignments, projects, laboratory reports or examinations from being used by other students". Therefore, MacInsiders is not responsible for any students caught for academic dishonesty due to selling, buying, sharing, or anything that may be the result of these activities such as plagiarising.

Thank you and have a happy new year!

For those who have been asking: MacInsiders does allow you to list in the Marketplace notes, study guides or test prep materials you've written yourself when studying for a test or exam that you would like to share with students. But remember, these are study materials and not the actual exams or tests themselves.

I'm curious where this information actually comes from. The OP states that custom courseware is not allowed to be resold, however MI lists Textbooks and Courseware as a genre under Marketplace. I don't see anywhere in the link provided that says we can't sell or buy courseware. Also, one of my professors last year specifically told us that we could buy courseware from students in the previous class because it contained the same material and would save us a lot of money. Was the professor incorrect in saying this?

On MacInsiders we define 'courseware' as anything needed for the course (ie. textbooks). The packages sold by McMaster for classes are called "Custom Courseware", and aren't what we're referring to in the Marketplace. We don't have a specific marketplace category to sell Custom Courseware packs.

I've taken 'custom courseware' out of the OP post until we can get better clarification. It's difficult to get black/white definitions on what you are allowed to sell. But technically the custom courseware that you purchase from Titles (aka. the photocopied package you get with articles in it, etc) is copyrighted and thus you would not be allowed to go and make more photocopies of it yourself and sell them to students. But I personally see 'Custom Courseware' as being like a textbook, and therefore the physical copy you purchased should be able to be sold to another student as you said, LizziePizzie.

Hmm, that makes sense that students should be able to sell the original physical custom courseware since it's basically like being a textbook.

These rules aren't MacInsiders specific... it applies to posting that sort of stuff on any site, whether its Kijiji or Facebook. If McMaster catches you, you can get in trouble either way.
