Requirement for Overloading
Hey everyone

I just have a quick question. If you plan on overloading 6 and 6 for a total of 12 courses (all 3 units), do you need any formal permission letter? Or will SOLAR let you register for them on your own?

I want to make sure I can overload without any permission before course selection starts.

Thanks!

You need permission; SOLAR will just tell you 'Nooooo' even if you have all necessary pre-reqs.

Yup. I tried to add an additional course a few years ago (just to see if it would let me). Negatory.

Hmm, I'm also interested in knowing this. Do you know who in particular we're supposed to contact?

Search for "Overload"

You need a Sessional Average of 7

I'd do it now. It might take some time to process any documents and McMaster is pretty slow when it comes to administrative issues.

I'm calling guidance tomorrow to see if I need to do anything special.

Go in person if you can. Things get processed faster it seems when you go talk to them directly. I think it depends on your faculty when it comes to processing time. Science is pretty fast. I went in to get pre-requisits waived for a course, it was almost immediate. It was awesome.

For now I think I'm just going to email them, since I have work. If it still hasn't been resolved by the time it gets close to the SOLAR opening date, I'll try to go in person.

Thanks guys

I'm pretty sure you have to go in person, because that's what they made me do last summer. You have to sign a permission form, and the head of your department/next available person signs it too, and then they change the number of units allowed on SOLAR. The whole process took about an hour, but if you want to add electives I'd suggest you do it sooner than your registration day on SOLAR, because those classes fill up fast

Great... now I have to ask my boss to let me take a day off work :p I'll try emailing first anyway.

Thanks...

Well, I emailed the adviser for my department and he did it all online within the hour. Now I don't have to go in

I went in yesterday and they just told me that Commerce doesn't require a letter of permission. Just a 7.0 GPA. So luckily I didn't have to stick around!
