Setup Thunderbird with Mac Email - 2016
1. Add Mail Account in Thunderbird
-Options -> Account Settings -> Account Actions -> Add Mail Account

2. Enter Name, Mac Email and Password

3. Enter the following settings for your account:
-Incoming - IMAP - mcmasterimap.mcmaster .ca - Port 993
-Outgoing - SMTP - mcmastersmtp.mcmaster .ca - Port 465
-Username is your macid
-Before clicking Re-test/Done, do step 4

4. Turn on access for less secure apps for your Mac email account
"https://www.google.com/settings/u/0/security/lesssecureapps"

5. Go back to Thunderbird and click Done

I know step 4 sounds sketchy but I think this is just because Google doesn't like the way Thunderbird sets up your Mac email account for some reason. Since Thunderbird is one of the world's most popular email programs, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've had my account up and running with Thunderbird for awhile now and no hacks/sketchy emails.

lol, much logic in your words I sense. If something is popular, then it's safe. Yeah, like Windows and Tinder.

More like it's safe because no one uses it.

Windows and Safe don't belong in the same sentence.

And google email has changed their policy for accessing emails, some clients aren't supported, for example android default generic email application

Didn't Mozilla drop support for thunderbird besides security patches
