Sexual Health Resources at McMaster

Sexual Health Resources at McMaster

By Jennifer Li

GLBT Resources:
The Queer Students Community Centre (QSCC), located in the student centre (MUSC 214) is a supportive environment with a resource library on sexual orientation (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Pansexual, Questioning, Heteroflexible, etc.) and sexual identity (intersex, transsexual, two-spirit, etc). QSCC offers many services such as confidential peer counselling and health issue clarification from a student nurse. There is also an online message board provided through QSCC: http://php.orbiscommunicatio ns.com/qscc/

The Health and Wellness Centre (MUSC B106) and SHEC (MUSC 202) are positive spaces with GLBT resources.

Campus Health Clinic (Student Centre, MUSC B101):
In order to book an appointment, you can visit the clinic to book in-person or call 905-525-9140 x 22700. Sexual Health related services include: contraceptive counselling, STI testing (including HIV), pregnancy testing, annual health exams.
In order to get a reduced price for contraceptives, the prescription must be from a Campus Health doctor. For information about options and pricing click here.

Emergency contraception is also available at a reduced rate ($15), but an appointment is necessary.

Note: Emergency contraceptive is over the counter, if the clinic is closed or you cannot get an appointment, you do not need a prescription.

Away from home? Uncomfortable with a male doctor conducting your yearly physical? You can get your yearly physical done at the Campus Health Clinic has an excellent team of female physicians. Getting a pap smear is a necessary, albeit awkward, test for women who are 21 or older, or females who are sexually active. The physicians are very knowledgeable and understanding throughout the process.

Campus Health: Health and Wellness Centre (Student Centre, MUSC B106):
There are many resources in the Health and Wellness centre ranging from sexual identity, STIs, contraceptive options, healthy relationships, and much more. Feel free to stop by and browse the selection of resources.

A volunteer organization under Campus Health, the Peer Health Educator program has a team specifically for sexual health. They are responsible for the bulletin board displays around campus, awareness tables, the Health Talk Newsletter, and workshops in residences.

There are also free condoms!

SHEC (Student Centre, MUSC 202):
SHEC is funded by the McMasters Student Union. It provides confidential peer counselling and has plenty of resources on sexual health. There is the option of a confidential pregnancy test.

Free condoms, lube, vaginal contraceptive film (VCF), and dental dams are available.
