Shadowing Honours Biochem
Sooooo I didn't have a high enough GPA to get into Honours Biochem (I met all the minimum requirements, but the entrance GPA for the program this year went way up) , but I talked to the department advisor and she said she would put me on a waiting list to get in.
I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can answer:

1. Do you know of anyone who has been on a waitlist for a program and gotten in? I'd like to know if I even have a chance...

2. If I don't get in, does anyone know what courses I should take for this year (Second Year) to still be eligible to graduate without taking summer school or an extra year once I raise my marks and transfer into Honours Biochem?
The advisor mentioned something about taking BIOCHEM 2EE3 and 3G03 instead of BIOCHEM 2B03 and 2BB3. Are these courses equivalent/will taking 2EE3 and 3G03 still allow me to move forward in Honours Biochem without having to take 2B03 and 2BB3 another year?

Thanks!

take all the required courses for which you have prereqs for:

This is what I found (assuming you did typical life sci first year and are in an honours program)

you can take:

chem 20a3, chem 20b3, stats 2b03, bio 2b03, bio 2c03 chem bio 2a03 & chem bio 2p03 (if you are in an honours program you can take them), biochem 2ee3

the advisor mentioned bio chem 2ee3 + 3g03 because biochem 3g03 is anti-requisite to both biochem 2b03and 2bb3 so I suppose they won't make you repeat biochem 2b03 2bb3.

Here's the list of requirement for core biochem: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1513.html

2EE3 is an antirequisite for 3D03, and 3G03 is an antirequisite for 2B03/2BB3. You won't learn the material nearly as in depth as 2B03/2BB3, but if the advisor told you that taking these courses will let you get around the 2B03/2BB3/3D03 requirements, then it's probably okay.

2EE3 + 3G03 often substitute for courses requiring 3D03 or 2BB3, so you should be alright taking upper year courses if you only take 2EE3 and 3G03.

What program are you going into instead? Molecular Bio & Genetics people are allowed to take 2B03/2BB3, but I don't know if that program is an option for you. Alternatively, you could beg the program advisor to waive the prereqs and let you take 2B03/2BB3.

The chances of being accepted while on the waiting list depends on many factors. McMaster always over enrolls everything. So depending on how many seats are actually available and how much they over enrolled by would need to be taken into account, as well as how many students accept the program. They should know soon, if not now. When was course registration for level 2 science?

@GuitarHero: So yeah, they should already know if there is space in the biochem program or not. Try contacting them again to see what they say.

They won't necessarily know just because registration started. I know some people last year who didn't register right away because they didn't know what program they wanted.
