On Wednesday January 13, 2010 the McMaster women's basketball team will host their third annual Shoot for a Cure event in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The McMaster women's basketball (6-4) team will take on Brock University (7-3) at 6:00 PM at the Burridge Gymnasium with the McMaster men's team (5-5) matching up against the Badgers (4-6) at 8:00 PM.
The Shoot for a Cure event is an initiative of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
The campaign has proven an overwhelming success in its first two years as the WBCA presented a cheque for $81,512.00 to the Breast Cancer Foundation at last March's CIS championship in Regina, a year after collecting $50,320 in its inaugural season.
In 2008-09, an additional $11,000 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local cancer organizations bringing the total to over $92,500.00.
For the 2009/2010 season, the WBCA has set a goal of raising over $100,000.00. WBCA president, Jeff Speedy, head coach at the
University of Regina, indicated that the WBCA "lost one of our own this year in former Laurentian star, Carloyn (Swords) Sturgess". Speedy stated that "this has really hit home for many of us and will certainly serve as extra motivation to reach our goal".
The WBCA will use the CIS Women's Basketball championship hosted at McMaster University, March 12-14, 2010 to raise funds and to present the cheque to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
McMaster women's basketball, head coach, Theresa Burns stated that "McMaster is proud to support this initiative, and we looking forward to hosting the CIS women's basketball championship in March"
