The Society of Off-Campus Students

The Society of Off-Campus Students
By Jenn Catanzaro, SOCS

Not living in res first year? Feeling left out because you already live in Hamilton or missed the deadline for res applications? Think you’re going to miss out on everything? Think again. We know what it’s like to worry about not being able to meet people and wonder how it’s even possible to stay involved if you’re not living on campus. The Society of Off-Campus Students is here for you! SOCS offers the ultimate university experience!

We plan an amazing Welcome Week specifically for you! Not only do you get to meet hundreds of other off campus students, but you also participate in events throughout the week with everyone in res too! Welcome Week is the perfect opportunity to meet tons of new people who are in your faculty, have the same living arrangements as you, and even who you just share the same interests with. For the first days of your university experience, campus will be filled with first years and Welcome Week Reps. This makes it extremely easy for you to have fun, meet people, and feel safe around your campus.

SOCS not only participates in Welcome Week, but also provides events all throughout the year. Usually around 2 events per month, we give first year students a chance to stay involved, as well as rekindle Welcome Week friendships and simply to make their first year of university an awesome experience. Anyone can come to our events (whether they are in first year or fourth, living off-campus or in res, etc) but SOCS members receive a special discount to some of our annual events such as the SOCS Formal and Halloween Pub Night. We also raise money for the Jamie Kuss Foundation, have our Academic Success Series, SOCS Athletics teams, social committees, peer mentoring program, and much more. These events are a great way to stay in touch and stay involved at MAC while having fun. Everyone needs a break from studying sometimes, so come out and show us your SOCSy side! We hope to see you all during Welcome Week!

Throughout the year there is always a SOCS exec member in the SOCS Office during the day, so if you have any questions regarding ANYTHING or just feel like coming by to say hi, give us a visit! We’re located in the Student Centre basement room 109 (MUSC B109). Or send us an email at [email protected], phone call at 905.525.9140 x27627, or check out our website www.socs.ca coming soon, & join our facebook group ‘Socs!’ to see some pictures from last year!

I had some apprehension living off-campus first year, but the more I found out about SOCS, I became more relieved and excited. I can't wait to meet everyone and have fun at SOCS events.
