We started off with java just doing console applications, moved to manually creating GUIs (ie not like Visual C# where it's drag and drop, we had to wrote the code for all the GUI elements) and that's about it. I'd some basic sorting algorithms, bubble sort, 2D arrays that sort of stuff in highschool. C is all console apps right?

Not if you use a graphics library. I've never made a GUI in C personally... I find GUIs to just be annoying and time consuming to make most of the time.
