Congratulations J-Met on making the SRA again, and to huzaifa as well! I'm glad there is still some senior members on the SRA still.

Damn, Ojo lost by two votes.

I don't understand this voting system; how does ranking your votes translate into # of votes for a person?

The voting actually isn't preferential. Every vote you cast counts equally. If you put numbers on your ballot for preferences, they just take them all as one vote per candidate you marked down. To me, it seems like kind of an unfair system.

Say you have person A and person B. You want to vote for them both, but you prefer A over B. Now if you vote for both, your ballot could bump person B into an elected rank, meaning person A is not elected, even though you preferred A to B. If it was a preferential ballot, your vote would be assigned to A, and only when A is determined either elected or not elected would your vote go to B.

I asked about changing from FPTP for SRA elections to STV and was met with a reply about how it would encourage fringe candidates. Considering we have AV in Presidentials I don't see why its a problem. Maybe a change would be more amenable this year.
