You haven't read the labour relations act. It takes a bit of work but it's certainly doable.

If memory serves a few years ago the Special Constables at Mac decertified from one union and joined another. I think they are CAW now.

Can they just NOT be in a union if they choose so? Or do they have to union-hop?

Actually I have checked up on decertifying CUPE. It takes a majority of the TA's to vote for it. Not a majority of those that voted, but an absolute majority. Doable? Really?

The issue is that myself, as an individual, has no say in whether or not to be in the union. So I can be against CUPE all I want, and I can (and will) break the strike, but that alone won't give me back my $30/month that CUPE extorts from me.

Its not a matter of being unionized and what not its the option of not being able to choose to be in a union or not. Its about time, you are given the option of opting out of being a union member, if all the union fees i pay go towards this type of crap and I don't even get a say on whether i want the new proposal, is there a really a point in being a union? All unions does it b**** and ask for more money, job protection, etc. Maybe the strike at Mac must be like the driver tester strike where the province don't give a crap about them. Let them strike as long as they want to, it seems those driving testers can't live on strike pay anymore and are demanding to go back to work, but the union being as stubborn as they are, won't allow them. So who really has the power you or the union?

Absolutely NOT. No freaking way. There is a time and place for unions, and a North American university, is just not one of them -- especially for students.

When my partner was a PhD candidate and a TA -- not at McMaster -- there was no sense of entitlement. When my family members (see previous posts) were in that position during their educations, it was the same thing. Deal with it. Don't put other people's educations in jeopardy or use them as hostages; it is unspeakably selfish.

I have belonged to a union during my employment at a college (against my will). It was not a pleasant experience. It reminds me of this whole fiasco.
