Switching from Life sci to Mol bio and genetics
Hi everyone, I am Level 2 life sci student and i want to transfer to Mol bio and genetics next year, But i need a really high avg this year to do that (around 9.5 avg). I need to know how realistic or hard it is to switch? For level two, I am taking all level 2 biology courses that are required fro genetics program, expect for 1EE3 because i don't have a prereq (orgo chem) for that. But, it is one bio that is required to be completed by end of level 2( i am really weak in chemistry esp orgo). Any suggestions on what should i DO would be immensely appreciated!!

Very easy to switch..if your cGPA meets the requirement =D
Just go to the science office, across from BSB147 and tell them you want to be considered for that program in your 3rd year, sometime early in 2nd semester. Take as many similar courses as molbio students are taking, that way you aren't too far behind.
ps. Orgo is hard :S:S, take it in summer school?

For molecular bio/genetics, orgo is required, isn't it? So you'll have to take it for the program.

Switching will not be easy. Molecular Biology and Genetics is a limited seated program. A lot of people applied this year and the result was a high acceptance average. (Not many people applied in my year and the average was much lower). So transfer into this program will depend highly on two factors (in addition to your CA):
1. The number of people that actually accept the program as the one they want to pursue. McMaster always over enrolls because they are taking into account that not everyone will accept. If more people accept than they thought they would then your chances of transferring will decrease. The opposite is also true.
2. The number of people that transfer out of the program (or drop out) by the beginning of the following year. The more people leave the program, the more seats are available.

I think the reason why the average is so high this year compared to last year is because last year it was a new program. My year is the first class in that program. So people probably didn't know about it...

hmmm...i think they introduced the program in 2007 or before that, molecular biology is definitely a good program to get in, just keep your GPA high and reapply next year.

Molecular Biology was discontinued along with 2 (or 3) other programs. They were replaced by Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2009/2010.

ohhh..oopz, my bad. i think my friend got into the one called: honors biology - molecular biology and genetics.
So now people graduate with molecular biology degree...instead of just biology degree?

so now it is "BSc - honors molecular biology - genetics specialization" instead of "BSC-honors bio - molecular biology and genetics specialization"?

No, it's just Molecular Biology and Genetics. It's not a specialization.
