Will taking Math 1LS3 over 1A03 be ok?
I'm going into Life Sciences in September and I wanted to take Math 1A stream over the 1L stream, but 1A03 is currently full, forcing me to take 1L. I know the 1L stream is more applications and 1A more theory according to these forums (1LS3 has also gotten a lot of negative comments), but how much material would I be missing out on? Will this come back to bite me in later on? I didn't do that well in Grade 12 Calc, only getting low 80s, but I was kind of interested in material, and right now I'm not too sure what I level 2 program to get into, so I'm trying to keep my options open. Some advice will be most appreciated.

It's fine, most of the comments were because if you wanted to do more math back in the day you had to take 1AA3 and therefore had a big jump in material. However 1LT3 exists now. Unless you want to take upper year maths, then you should try and get into 1A03 and 1AA3.

If I'm not able to get in to 1A03, but still want to do upper year math, will I still be able to? And if I am, does that mean the upper year math will just be harder?

1LS3 qualifies as 1A03 as long as you get a grade of B- (7) or above. So you can take 1LS3-> 1AA3. The courses are equivalent, with 1A/1AA focusing more on physical sciences while 1LS/1LT focuses more on biological applications.

You'll be able to get into math 1a03.

There's like, 2.5 months until school starts. And people always change classes after the first day or so.

You can also just do 1LT3 and take upper year math courses with that...

Keep trying to get into 1a03 and if you still can't get in within a couple of days before school, you should email the math undergraduate office ([email protected] ter.ca) so they can open a seat for you. Math 1ls3 is a waste of time and money, a large portion of the content is high school review (you learn things like unit conversion and graphing linear function for like a month!). As a science student, having proficient math knowledge is important and also keeps your option open to other fields in science.

Would they really open up a seat in that course just because I asked them to?

Many times, yes. When you ask, they'll probably say something like "thank you for requesting a seat. we will get back to you as soon as possible blah blah blah". But don't worry, a class like 1A03 will definitely be open again when kids switch around courses and stuff in August. Just wait until Solar opens again in August and check frequently for an opening in 1A03
