You don't even need to say something rude.

I usually say "Do you mind not talking?" with the evilest look ever known to man. This is where ***** faces come in handy.

Practice makes perfect!

So long as they're not so loud as to distract, then who cares? Throwing shit at them makes you beyond immature, and being a prude is just lame. Deal with it. 90% of the time the prof is saying something from the textbook, so just read that if you didn't catch what he said-- you have a book for a reason.

well princess its more like $20 cause it course is about 500-600$ and you have about 30-33 class' in a term so each lecture comes about to $20 give or take.

personally i just clear my throat and if they dont stop talking i just tap em on the sholder and tell them to "hey guys do you mind not talking to hard to focus" and usually ppl are nice enough to listen. this year i try sitting in rows 3-5 and usally ppl in those rows dont talk

How on earth do you get that number?!

50mins per lecture * hrs per week / 60mins/hr * 12 weeks = 30hrs per term
Most faculties charge approx $550 for a 3-unit course (based on being a level 3 Canadian student).
$550/30hrs=$18.33/hr

If you're in engineering, which is the most expensive faculty, you're looking at something closer to $23.33/hr for a 3-unit course.

I generally try and sit in the first or second row. Some people called me an apple polisher, I say bollocks to them.

What we all should do, IMO, is wink.
I'm serious.
Just look at them for long enough and when they turn, which they will as long as you're not in/past their blind spot, just wink. Or grin.

What if they wink back and then you suddenly find yourself on an uncomfortable date at Bridges with this person?
They are now popping a breath mint and walking you back to residence...

doug says thanks to AelyaS for this post.

ask them nicely once to cease, if they persist show some balls, throw on an angry scowl and tell them to shut the **** up, especially if there is no reasonable chance that they could kick your ass.

These 2 girls were going on LOUDLY for a good 10 minutes after class started... I was sitting there fuming.

I don't know how I did it, but all I remember is turning around with a big smile on my face and saying in my super girly voice "Can you guys please stop talking?"

They actually apologized. And stopped.

I don't know how I got the smile out...people tell me I look pissed even when I'm happy. LOL.

It normally doesn't work though. If they continue, I go with the "please shut the **** up." That's normally effective after the polite attempt.

But what makes me more furious is people who don't say anything. Why are you timid? How is it rude for YOU to say something to them? I shall share some of my nut sack, if needed. =]

I was once involved in staging a situation for a video, involving 2 guys talking, and a girl spazzing out/flipping chairs in anger during a lecture...helped a friend with his Marketting project, haha.

That being said, I think it's a bunch of crap to say "Who cares about lectures, that's what the textbook is for."

Some people are visual learners and can forego lectures in lieu of a good textbook...myself, I've done this countless times. However on the other end of the spectrum, auditory learners can forego purchase on the text if they get (peace and quiet during) semi-helpful lectures.

You're paying for the lectures. If you missed something the prof said because someone's being a douche, it's not 'tough nuts' to you, you've missed out. So speak up and make a difference. Remember, there's probably like 5 people sitting around you wanting to say something to that douche but are just as timid.
