About textbooks
Hey guys,

I'm going into first year and I'm just wondering when should I start buying textbooks for my courses. Normally, when do people start this? Also, where can I check what textbooks to buy (if any) for each course?

Thank you.

I suppose I can do that if I find them through torrents. But, where do I find out which textbooks (if any) I need for my courses?

Hereeeeeeeeeeee. Some courses may not have a textbook, some may be optional, some may be required. Don't buy anything until your prof says you need it.

Hi there,

To find out what textbooks you need for your courses go to the campus store website, go to textbooks and then input your courses. It will give you a list of textbooks that are required or optional. Also, just a bit of advice, some of the textbooks that are required may not be used by the prof (i.e. he may make it optional or he will just barely refer to it, waste of money i know) you can find out during the first week of classes what materials you absolutely need for the course, or find out from people who have recently taken the course.

Hope this helps!

As far as torrenting....

I've looked for textbooks on p2p and thru piratebay, but most of the time i can only find older editions or international/US editions.

They use the Stewart Calculus books.

When I took it they used Hoffmann/Bradley/Miners "Applied Calculus". 1M03 was a significantly different course than 1A03 - lots of word problems, absolutely zero trig, and even a fair bit of material from 1AA3.

Hi Musa. A good question. This article I wrote on MacInsiders should help you out

The biggest tip is to wait until AFTER classes start, you get the actual course outline from the prof which will tell you the textbooks you'll actually need and which are 'optional' (if any). Then you can go to the bookstore and buy USED versions of the textbooks that they resell, if you want the paper version of the book. The bookstore usually has a bunch of used textbooks still available within the first week or so.

Also keep in mind, if it's an elective course, you may not like the course once you read the course outline and sit in your first lecture class with the professor... so you do have the option to 'add/drop' courses when school starts. There is a window of time where you could drop an elective, and try in SOLAR to pick up a different elective if there's an available spot. Throughout this add/drop period, a lot of openings will come and go because as someone drops a course, it opens up a spot and then when a person trying to get into that course checks SOLAR - a spot will open briefly and it's first come first serve at that point.

It's Mosaic now, not Solar. But your last paragraph is important advice. Sit in on the first week of classes before you go all buy-textbooky. Every student will come across several classes that turn out to be a tremendous mistake to take. And you do great benefit to your psychological health, time management and academic career by dumping bad classes.
