That wasn't common sense, that was a highly thorough and knowledgeable understanding of real world economics, and he was just flaunting his knowledge. His understanding of business (etc) was portrayed to be superior to that of the professor, and he clearly already knew the underlying theoretical concepts the professor was trying to teach, and was cluttering up the discussion with things the students didn't need to know, and would learn later in the workforce.
